Teas to Induce Period: 4 Natural Herbal Recipes

Teas that induce periods can often cause uterine contractions, and encourage the uterus’ lining to be shed.

Some of these teas are used as traditional medicines in certain continents, including South America, Africa and Asia, even though they haven’t been proven effective on humans.

1. Ginger tea

It is safe to drink ginger tea during pregnancy as long as you take it in small doses (between 1 and 3 grams or between 1/3 and 1/2 teaspoon for 3-4 days). This root can cause contractions in the uterus at higher doses.

Allow the ginger slices to soak in hot water for between 5 and 10 minutes. Use a sieve with mesh to strain the infusion. This tea can be consumed 2 or 3 times a day.

If you make small cuts in the root before soaking them again, you can reuse it for two or three additional teas. The ginger will be released at a higher concentration.

2. Senna tea

  • Senna leaves, 2 grams.
  • One cup of boiling water


Put the leaves of senna in the hot cup and let them soak from 5-10 minutes. Use a sieve with mesh to strain the infusion. This tea can be consumed 2 or 3 times a day.

Senna is known to be a laxative and it’s normal to get diarrhea after drinking it, even if you weren’t constipated to start with. This tea shouldn’t be consumed for longer than three days as it may cause diarrhea and dehydration.

3. Radish Iced Tea

In studies on radishes, it was found that an iced tea containing radish leaves stimulates the uterus to induce menstruation. The saponins, alkaloids and other compounds found in the leaves are likely responsible for this effect. These substances stimulate smooth muscle contractions of the stomach and uterus.


  • Radishes with 5 or 6 leaves
  • Water 150 ml or 5 oz


Blend the radish and water together in the blender until you get a homogeneous mix. The liquid should be strained through a sieve. Drink 2 or 3 cups of liquid per day

  • One cup of boiling water

These teas are not suitable for everyone

The blood circulation to the muscles of the uterus is altered by teas that start your period. These teas are to be avoided when there’s a chance of becoming pregnant, because they can negatively impact the fetal growth.

Children and older adults should avoid these teas as they can also cause laxative effects (due their ability to stimulate smooth muscles).
